DO U SEE ME!
written by Teya Green |. March 8, 2021
Do u see me!
Do you seeeee meeee
From the crown of my head to the sole of my feet
I am a black
Discrimination against my nation
Racism now referred to as my imagination
A dream deferred
Now transferred into public displays for museums
To satisfy our need for reparations
Charged at the door to see what was deprived from me
Others visit and feel that the colorful floors
Full of artwork and wood carvings defines me.
My heritage is more than art
That is just a portion of creativity
That the government has stolen
Put in glass casesto mock our evolution of kings and queens to pawnsin this chess game, called democracy
Do u see me!
Do you seeeee meeee
From the crown of my head to the sole of my feet
I am a black
However tragically a reflection of not my own but instead a fear of the color of my skin
My color which is marked by crayola
And seemingly defined by the absence of light
Or is it the absence of white
Or is it the absence of rightIs my presence so wrong
Let me ask u a question?
Have you seen the stripes
Have you seen the stripes?
The stripes that stole my people
Enslaved my culture, raped my sister
Beat my brother
Have you seen the stripes?
I’ve seen the stripes
Has the Banner, starred and spangled
Got your mind tangled
Were you lost or untold
Because the stripes hang on your flag pole
The stripes have beaten me black and blue and even richer hue
But yet I’m the predator
And tho you send me to the kitchen when company comes
I have the audacity to dream
For I shall not be deferred
I shall not dry up
Like a raisin in the son
I will not explode
Do u see me so you see me
From the crown of my head
To the sole of my feet I am black
There is grace in my race
